“Significant appetite” for volatility products as trading outcompetes other strategiesThere is “significant appetite” for volatility products across the derivatives markets as firms seek to hedge risk and capitalise on spikes in volatility, an Acuiti.io study has found.Expanding Horizons in Volatility Trading, which was produced in association with MIAX, found that 44% of FCMs surveyed reported increased demand from their client base for trading volatility since 2020.Acuiti’s head of research Ross Lancaster said: “There is significant room for innovation in volatility markets. Why are European Exchanges struggling to attract ETF trading?The clue is meant to be in the name but unfortunately when it comes to Europe, the Exchanges don't see muchaction when it comes to ETF trading as the graph below demonstrates.[This is my estimation of the market so feel free to shoot me down if you disagree] Not only do RFQ'sdominate ETF trading, but there are only two of note - Tradeweb and Bloomberg. And neither of them are going away anytime soon.So how is it that they have become the venues of choice and what can the exchanges do to combattheir growth? One of the argumentsconsistently put forward to impeding the growth of ETFs in Europe is a fragmented trading market and therefore a lack of visibility on the true liquidity of ETFs trading.However, having multiplevenues competing against each other does not help much to address this issue. A regulatory solution and a consolidatedtape has alwaysbeen the obvious answer but maybe the real solution is for there to be one dominant player that acts as an aggregator for all ETF trading.Who that should be is anotherstory and what impact it would have is beyond the scope of this note BUT it's a thought.Comments welcome, as always#etfs#etf#assetmanagement#investmentmanagement#education
