Turmeric Shots Recipe (1)

Why we love this recipe

Hello from the middle of a loooooog juice cleanse. I'm Januarying so hard it'll be mid-February before it's all said and done. More on the details of the cleanse and my tenuous (if high-energy!) grasp on sanity here. But today, here's a great little recipe for your juicer that you'll love incorporating into your real-life eating (or hey, your next juice cleanse).

Turmeric shots are:

  • Tangy, spicy, and sweet
  • Loaded with ingredients said to reduce inflammation
  • Designed to help improve VO2 max (hello, beet juice)
  • Just really delicious

What you'll need

Here's a glance at the ingredients you'll need to make turmeric shots.

Turmeric Shots Recipe (2)
  • Fresh turmeric is key for this recipe. It's reasonably easy to find in grocery stores these days. But if you can't find it there, try an Indian market or consider buying online.
  • Fresh ginger adds both a spicy kick and lots of health benefits.
  • Golden beets have the same oxygenating power as red ones but keep the color of this juice a gorgeous goldenrod.
  • Green apples work beautifully in this recipe because of their balanced sweet and tangy flavors and their lower sugar levels compared to other apples.
  • Use a good, juicy orange variety like Cara Cara.

How to make them

Here's what you'll do to make these turmeric shots. You can see all the steps in action in the video that accompanies this post, and get the details in the recipe card below.

  1. Juice the ingredients in the order listed to maximize yield. Start with the turmeric and ginger.
  2. Next up, the golden beets. Then flush them though the juicer with the limes.
  3. Follow with the carrots.
  4. Finally, let the juicy orange and apples roll on through. Stir it up, pass through a fine-mesh strainer if you like, and serve or store. That's it!

Expert tips and FAQs

What's the story with turmeric and black pepper?

Fresh turmeric is easier for your body to absorb than ground turmeric, since it contains its own natural oils. Even so, it's great to include some black pepper in your food throughout the day, since it aids in turmeric absorption.

What's the best juicer?

The best juicer for you depends on your budget and schedule.

For the past few years I've been using the Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer (available atAmazon or Williams-Sonoma). It's a masticating juicer (teehee), which means, essentially, that it chews up the produce and spits out the juice. Masticating juicers preserve more nutrients for longer as compared to centrifugal juicers, which I like because you can juice in batches and store it in the fridge for up to two or three days.

Masticating juicers come with a higher price tag and can be even harder to clean than centrifugal juicers.

Centrifugal juicers are a less-expensive option and often easier to clean. Because their juicing method tears up the produce more, juice will oxidize more quickly. It's best to drink it soon after juicing. My favorite centrifugal juicer is the Breville Juice Fountain (available at Amazon or Williams-Sonoma).

You can 100% make this recipe with either type.

Can I freeze turmeric shots?

Yes! This recipe makes two to three cups of turmeric shots, which you can store in a tightly sealed jar in the fridge for up to three days. Or freeze them in ice cube trays and then transfer to a zip-top bag to store in the freezer for up to three months.

This strong, vibrant golden juice tastes as great as it makes you feel. It's best served in small amounts (a few ounces at a time), since it's made from relatively high-sugar fruits and vegetables. With a three-inch piece of ginger, the juice is very gingery (which I like), so cut down if you'd rather have a milder ginger taste and feel.

Prep Time5 minutes

Total Time5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 pieces turmeric (2 to 3 inches each)
  • 1 3-inch piece ginger
  • 1 medium golden beet, peeled
  • 2 limes, skin and white pith removed
  • 2 medium carrots
  • 1 large juicy orange (such as Cara Cara), skin and white pith removed
  • 2 small green apples

Instructions

  1. Feed all ingredients through juicer in the order listed.
  2. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve if you like.
  3. Stir and serve a few ounces at a time.

Notes

  1. I use theKuvings Whole Slow Juicer, a masticating juicer that juices pretty efficiently and preserves nutrients for a longer period than centrifugal juicers. You can make this recipe with any juicer.
  2. Keeps tightly sealed in the fridge for several days, or freeze in ice cube trays or small storage containers and store tightly sealed in the freezer for up to three months.
