Ingredients needed

Onion – 1 medium size
Tomato – 2 medium size
Mixed Vegetables – 1 cup
Tamarind – Marble sized ball
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Tur Dal – 1/4 cup
Quick cooking Oats -3/4 cup
Bisi bela bath Powder -2 1/2 -3 tbsp
Salt needed

For the seasoning

Oil – 1 1/2 tbsp
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds -1/4 tsp
Red chilli -1
Asafoetida/hing – a pinch
Curry Leaves -2 sprigs

For Garnishing

Ghee/clarified butter -1-2 tsp
Coriander leaves – finely chopped -2 tbsp

Preparation

Kindly check my Bisi Bela Bath Recipe and prepare bisibelabath powder/masala as given there or you can use ready made bisibelabath powder.

Vegetables Used – Carrot, beans, potato and peas (all together 1 cup) + 4-5 cauliflower florets. Par boil the vegetables with a little salt and keep it aside. Blanch cauliflower florets and keep it ready.

Soak tamarind in a cup of water, extract the juice and discard the pulp.

Soak tur dal in a cup of hot water for 15 minutes and pressure cook with a pinch of turmeric powder until soft. Mash it well and keep it ready.

Now we have cooked tur dal, tamarind extract, bisibelabath powder, oats (you can use any quick cooking oats) and chopped vegetables kept ready. Now we will proceed to make Oats bisibelabath.

Method

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add fenugreek seeds, red chilli, hing and curry leaves.

Then add chopped onions and saute until it turns transparent.

Then add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and saute until tomatoes turn soft.

Add tamarind extract, bisibelabath powder, salt needed and boil until the raw flavor of the tamarind goes.

Add the par boiled vegetables, cooked dal, oats and a cup of water. Mix well to prevent forming lumps.

Cover and cook on low flame for 4-5 minutes, stirring in between to prevent it from getting burnt.

You can add more water if the consistency is thick. The consistency of bisibelabath should be semi solid, so add water accordingly. Once done remove from heat, drizzle a tsp of ghee and garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.

Serve hot with raita or papads or homemade potato chips.

Note – As it cools, it will become thick, so when reheating it, add a little hot water and reheat it.
